Maori education strategy relaunched

A programme to improve the way Maori perform in the education sector is being relaunched, after a damning report on how its initial introduction was botched.
Associate Education Minister Pita Sharples today unveiled the refreshed Ka Hikitia programme to educators at Auckland’s Orakei Marae in what is a series of regional relaunches.
The Auditor General has judged the programme has the potential to transform the system, but found the Education Ministry initially introduced it slowly and unsteadily, with poor planning and ineffective communication.
Dr Sharples says the criticisms were taken on board.
"I think we’ve had a good look at what happens and we've made it even more user friendly for the children there and theres more references and cross references, which allows them to grow in it. And I think theres a responsibility there for the staff and teachers to come on board easier than before, so we're hopeful of good things coming out of this," he says.
Pita Sharples also launched Tau Mai te Reo, the Maori language in education strategy, which covers both Maori medium education and Maori language in English medium.
