Joyce to trim wananga councils

Wananga are set to get a shake up as part of an overhaul of governance structures within the tertiary sector.
Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce has released a draft tertiary education strategy for the next give years.
Priorities include delivering skills for industry, getting at-risk young people into a career, boosting achievement of Maori and Pasifika, improving adult literacy and numeracy, growing international linkages, and strengthening research-based institutions.
Mr Joyce says the current governance structures for wananga are modelled on university councils, and don’t reflect their unique status as institutions characterised by ahuatanga and tikanga Maori.
He’s proposing smaller, more flexible councils for both universities and wananga, with between eight and 12 members compared with the current 12 to 20.
Requirements to include representatives from specific groups such as staff, students or employers would be removed.
