Papakura pa gets protection
A pa site near Papakura is to get extra protection, with the Department of Conservation approving a management plan.
Pukekiwiriki Pa Reserve at Redhill contains just over 1.5 hectares of the original pa, with many of its features damaged by quarrying, bulldozing and erosion.
It has been redesignated an historic reserve, which means it is considered a taonga which needs to be enhanced and protected because of its geological, cultural and archaeological significance.
The plan, which was developed by the Papakura Local Board and mana whenua, says the Auckland Council should buy back land where possible to expand the reserve to cover more of the original pa site.
