Art project probes Facebook generation
The winner of one of this year’s Te Waka Toi Nga Karahipi scholarships says it will help her with her work exploring the reality of young urban Maori.
Deane-Rose Marie Ngatai from Ngati Porou and Tainui is studying towards a Master of Design at Unitec.
Her masters project involves working with a group of Auckland Girls Grammar students, getting them to do video diaries of their kapa haka and their urban experience.
"They’re all like my teina, I have existing relationships with them and their whanaau as we are all an extended whanau together and they are more than happy to talk to me and be showcased and they are really comfortable with talking about their stories because being that generation they are so familiar with expressing themselves through Facebook and so on," Ms Ngatai says.
