Almost a third of the 240 new constables entering the New Zealand Police in the past year have been Māori, Pasifika or ethnic.

Alan Cassidy, the HR general manager, says the 30.8 percent figure compares with the previous high in 2009-10 of 28.5 percent.

He says the current recruitment strategy aims to build a police service that reflects the country's increasingly diverse communities.
