Lawyer convicted for smuggling

A former Māori Party candidate has been found guilty of smuggling contraband to convicted murderer and rapist Liam Reid in prison.
Lawyer Davina Murray defended herself during the hearing.
Reid is serving a 23-year sentence for raping and killing deaf woman Emma Agnew in Christchurch in 2007, and the rape, attempted murder and robbery of a 21-year-old student in Dunedin nine days later.
He claimed the contraband, an iPhone, cigarettes and lighter, had been planted by prison staff.
Murray is likely to now face a Law Society investigation.
During the hearing the Crown alleged Murray and Reid's relationship went beyond that of client-lawyer, and that text messages showed she planned to marry him in prison.
