Cultural competency tool a success
An online tool to help health workers increase their cultural competency has been used by more than 6000 people in its first year.
Associate Health Minister Tariana Turia says the tool, developed by Mauri Ora Associates on behalf of the Ministry of Health, will stay up at least until next March.
The free multimedia course takes about an hour to complete, and aims to give users a basic understanding of cultural competency and health literacy.
Mrs Turia says culture is about more than superficial differences, and health professionals who understand this communicate more effectively and can increase people’s willingness to seek support from health practitioners and health services.
