Working for iwi life’s ambition
The new interim chief executive of Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Authority says she always wanted to work for iwi, and she hopes to make the job permanent.
Adele Whyte was the Hawkes Bay iwi’s fisheries and environment manager until she was asked to fill in for Meka Whaitiri, who was last month elected MP for Ikaroa-Rāwhiti.
Dr Whyte started consulting to the iwi on fisheries and freshwater issues soon after completing her studies at Victoria University, and came on staff three years ago.
She says growing up it was her dream to work for her iwi.
Her priorities include making the sailing waka Te Matau ā Maui an important feature of the area, building an innovation centre, and protecting Ngāti Kahungunu’s interests in freshwater.
