Miromoda winners line up for Fashion Week
The organiser of the Miromoda Fashion Awards says Māori designers will make an exciting contribution to this year’s New Zealand Fashion Week.
The awards were held at Pipitea Marae’s refurbished conference facility, with the winners going through to the Miromoda showcase in September.
Ata Te Kanawa say Miromoda gives not only established designers a shot, but also emerging designers from the polytechnics, interested amateurs who may have some t-shirt designs, and the avante garde class which is open.
The avante garde category was won by Rotorua grandmother and master weaver Leilani Rickard, who made a range of rain capes out of a print of harakeke under a microscope.
Adrienne Whitewood won the Established designer category and supreme award, while the emerging designer award went to Mitchell Vincent of Ngāti Tuwharetoa for a collection of white knits inspired by the geothermal activity in his area.
The print award was won by Masterton school teacher Hohepa Thompson for his Mozzies series of t-shirt designs commenting on Māori in Australia.
