Māori pupils lagging in national standards
The latest National Standards data shows an increase in achievement for year 1-8 students, including for Māori.
Education Minister Hekia Parata released the 2013 national aggregate data this morning.
Reported achievement against the National Standard for reading increased by 1.2 per cent to 77.4 per cent, mathematics increased 1.4 per cent to 73.6 per cent, and the achievement for writing was up 2 per cent to 70 per cent.
Māori students had an achievement rate of just over 68 percent in reading, 63 percent in maths and 60 percent in writing.
Ms Parata says the data is extremely powerful for both identifying and providing support to all children, and targeting professional development to teachers.
She says the standards data is in line with other studies and shows disparity continues to exist, with achievement significantly lower for Māori and Pasifika learners, and boys trailing girls.
Education unions say the way schools report the data is still too inconsistent to make comparisons meaningful.
