Top shepherds vie for Ahuwhenua honours
It’s the chance of the shepherds to show what they are made of in this year’s Ahuwhenua Young Māori of the Year Award.
The winner will be announced in Taradale on Friday, as part of the national Ahuwhenua Māori farming awards.
The two finalists are Te Moana (Tem) Sidney, a junior shepherd at Mount Herbert Station in Waipukurau, and Jordan Smith, who is shepherd general at Kearins Bros Limited in Te Kuiti.
Judging panel member Fred Hardy from the Agriculture Industry Training Organisation says the pair stood out because of their positive attitudes, hardworking characters and commitment to their whānau.
The award is open to young Māori aged 16-25 years who are employed on a sheep and beef farm and studying towards a National Certificate in Agriculture.
Mr Hardy says last year’s winner and runners up, who came from the dairy section, have benefited from the networking opportunities with individuals and organisations that resulted.
