Green sees chance for all in Ikaroa Rāwhiti
The Green’s candidate for Ikaroa Rāwhiti isn’t convinced the seat will stay with Labour.
Marama Davidson, a former Human Rights Commission adviser, was selected to contest the by-election brought on by the death of Labour’s Parekura Horomia.
Labour has chosen Ngāti Kahungunu Chief Executive Meka Whaitiri as its candidate, television presenter Te Hamua Nikora will front for Mana, and the Māori Party is pinning its hopes on Na Raihania, who lost at the last election to Mr Horomia by 6000 votes.
Ms Davidson says all must be considered to have a chance.
"I believe that Parekura, it was his seat and I believe that many people are open to what all these candidates, including myself and the other parties can offer for the whānau who are living there, who are doing the mahi on the ground so personally I think it's up for grabs. I certainly am going to do my best to represent the issues and the party," she says.
Ms Davidson says she will highlight jobs and kaitiakitanga, particularly in terms of the threat to the environment from drilling and mining.
