Silver lining in Labour competition
Manurewa MP Louisa Wall says the calibre of people putting their names forward to represent Labour in the Ikaroa Rāwhiti by-election means the party is in a strong position.
Television presenter Shane Taurima is the latest to confirm he’s seeking the nomination to replace the late Parekura Horomia.
Also in the running are Ngāti Kahungunu Chief Executive Meka Whaitiri, Taiwhenua Chair Hayden Hape and Hastings District Councillor Henare O’Keefe.
Ms Wall says while Mr Taurima’s television profile may seem to give him an edge in a strong field, Ms Whaitiri’s netball history can’t be underestimated.
"She obviously has a long history with Parekura, as do many of the Silver Ferns. People might not know but Parekura had the likes of Noeline Taurua, Gail Parata, Waimarama Taumaunu, Tania Dearns and Meka. He really mentored this group of women and enabled them to play their sport," she says.
Nominations for the Labour candidacy close tomorrow, with selection meetings in the electorate on the weekend.
In a surprise development, the Green Party has announced it intends to field a candidate in Ikaroa Rāwhiti, with negotiations closing on Friday.
