Angel guides Kemp to sculpture win

Self-taught Rotorua sculptor Joe Kemp is celebrating his second win in the Lake House Arts Wood Sculpture Competition.
Artists are required to produce a wooden sculpture on the Auckland site in 10 days, starting from rough logs.
Kemp, from Ngāti Makino, Ngāpuhi, and Ngāi Tahu, was the last name drawn from the ballot so had to carve his work from a 3 metre length of Norfolk Pine that none of the other 28 competitors wanted.
He turned it into a female angel he called My Kaitiaki.
Kemp, who runs Te Haa Sculpture Gallery in Rotoma, says he wants to compete again in 2015 and make it three wins in a row.
The sculptures are on show at the Lake House Arts Centre gardens in Takapuna until May 26.
