Claimants want sovereignty report

Ngapuhi claimants have asked the Waitangi Tribunal why it hasn’t completed its report into stage one of their hearings before starting stage two.
The stage one hearings, which finished two years ago, looked at sovereignty and what the chiefs thought they were getting or giving up when they signed the Declaration of Independence in 1835 and then Te Tiriti five years later.
Veteran activist Titewhai Harawira told the hearing that if the stage one report had been delivered, the iwi would not need to go through the stage two investigations of individual land purchases.
The next hearing is the week starting May 13.
