Treaty deal best in circumstances

Top of the South Island iwi Ngāti Rarua is seeking support from its members for its proposed $11 million treaty settlement.
Ngāti Rarua Iwi Trust will be explaining the deal to Auckland members at the Auckland Airport Grand Chancellor this evening and at Russley Golf Club in Christchurch tomorrow.
It includes sharing several blocks with other iwi as cultural reparations, acknowledgement of its interest in various mountains, lakes, rivers and coastal areas, as well as cash and some commercial properties that can be leased back to government agencies.
Trustee Olivia Hall says it's not a big settlement compared to what has been lost, but it's the best that could be done in the circumstances.
She says it gives Ngāti Rarua a stake in the future of Te Tau Ihu, and the iwi is ready to move forward.
Ngāti Rarua has about 2800 members on its books, and it's giving them until March 28 to vote on the deal.
