Time for Pakeha to step up
Meanwhile, Māori Council co-chair Maanu Paul says Māori have carried the fight against asset sales for long enough, and it’s time for Pakeha to step up to the plate.
Mr Paul says the sale of state owned enterprises will affect all New Zealanders.
Opposition parties have been collecting signatures for a petition asking for a referendum on asset sales, but 49 percent of Mighty River Power could be in the hands of private shareholders by the time a referendum is held.
“That won’t kick in until next year and that would be too late. The sale would have occurred. My view is to every Pākeha, you owe it your children, my children and our children to go and sit down at Parliament and force this government not to sell,” he says.
