Money poured into thirsty farmers

Labour MP Shane Jones says the Government’s dismissal of policies to build more affordable homes, is in stark contrast to its support for farmers.
Both Labour and the Greens have targeted housing as an issue for the year, with Labour putting up a plan to build 100,000 homes over ten years.
Mr Jones says instead National is promising $400 million in irrigation schemes, with outgoing Primary Industries Minister David Carter signalling $80 million will be set aside in this year’s budget to fund dams on rivers in Canterbury, Hawke's Bay, Tasman, and Otago.
“So why is it to spend money to subsidies farmers’ irrigation but not allowed to spend money to assist garden variety, everyday kiwi struggling to get a home”.
Shane Jones says farmers have a track record of not paying back irrigation scheme subsidies, with National governments eventually writing off the debts.
