Treaty deals Christmas bonus for Te Tau Ihu
Top of the South Island iwi Te Atiawa is gearing up for a pre-Christmas signing of its historic treaty settlement.
Te Atiawa Manawhenua ki Te Tau Ihu Trust is looking at a $20 million deal, including schools and other government-owned property and $11.3 million cash.
Chair Glenys Payne says the cultural aspects are just as important, such as returning the original name Totaranui to Queen Charlotte Sound.
“Since the time of our arrival here, and that was pre-1840, hundreds of years ago, we’ve made our living here. We’ve lived here, worked here and died here so to actually get the real names, our true names back for our place and has been important. It has caused much more conversation in the commercial or the monetary component”.
Te Atiawa will sign at Waikawa Marae on December 21, the same day another Te Tau Ihu iwi, Ngāti Koata, signs its settlement at Nelson's Whakatu Marae.
