Māori missing on the water
Kahungunu leader Ngahiwi Tomoana wants to see more Māori and Pacific people working on and running commercial fishing boats.
The former Te Ohu Kaimoana chair spoke at today's Pacific New Zealand Fisheries Forum in Auckland on progress towards his vision of a Hawaiiki brand for fish products coming out of Aotearoa and the South Pacific.
He says while Māori own substantial quantities of quota and large fishing companies, there are few on the water.
It's a similar story in island nations.
"The big multinationals have taken over and are fishing the Pacific, just like in Aotearoa where you've got Sealord, Sanford, Talley's, a few big players and Maori are invisible on the water, so it's about how we take back our Hawaiikitanga, our rangatiratanga over the seas of Te Moananui ā Kiwa," Mr Tomoana says.
