Buck up and stay alive for kids
Former All Black captain Buck Shelford wants all men out there to see a doctor.
After recovering from lymphatic cancer and shedding 25 of the excess kilos he’d gathered since his days in the black jersey, Shelford is sharing what he’s learned about staying alive.
With sports scientist Grant Schofield he has written Buck Up: The Real Bloke’s Guide to Getting Healthy and Living Longer.
He says Maori men in particular aren’t making old bones.
“Forty, 45, 55 we’re dying and leaving behind teenage kids. Where’s their dad to bring them up. I think we’ve got to do something about it, get the word out there about looking after yourself more, going to the doctor, eating better food, getting better regular exercise,” Shelford says.
