Hawkes Bay Maori landowners are to be encouraged to grow crops such as figs, cherries and avocados to make their land commercial.
Mana Whenua project co-ordinator Shona Jones says a hui will be held tonight at Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga in Hastings to bring the owners of small blocks together with industry experts.
She says there are 1350 Maori land blocks in the Takitimu district from Wairoa to Wairarapa.
While not all were suitable for major cropping or grazing, they could be suited to high value niche crops which don’t need large areas of land.
