Brannigan Kaa releases new waiata Te Ngangara
Te Ngangara's groove is so happy and uplifting but the lyrics about meth aren't that at all! What gave you the idea to put these two things together?
The original version came from me and my guitar and it had a Latin groove to it. I chose that genre because I wanted people to hear the music first and then the lyrics. But methamphetamine originally came from South America. So the groove and the drug come from the same place.
What first-hand experience have you had with meth?
I’ve seen friends over the years get addicted. They lost weight, lost their wives, lost their man, lost their confidence. Boils and scabs. We’re all the same age and they’re going grey… It changes them.
It’s the low income – that’s what I’m thinking. When they take it, they’re a different person.
But then there are ones who handle it. And we don’t know. They got a nice house, nice clothes, seriously nice money – they’re happy. There’s no stress. We don’t know they’re taking it…
How did you keep from following the same path as your friends?
I don’t smoke that stuff, mate. I live healthy. I eat good food. I eat my greens. I’ve got a healthy family.
I don't have anything against people who use meth. I’ve lost some friends to it. But I want to target people who haven’t started so they never start. I want people to like this song so people can save their families.
When will we be able to add Te Ngangara to our music libraries?
I don’t know yet. See how it goes on the radio. I want this song to do well like Maumahara Noa. I want people repeating the chorus: “P mo te porangi. P mo te pohara." Take notice. Don’t do this drug.
Are you making more music at the moment?
I did Te Ngangara with (producer) Thomas Te Taite and he’s a wonderful, creative man. He’s my new doi, my new mate. I’m intending to do another song with him, maybe after Matatini, in English and maybe Country & Western style. We’ll see.
