Abuse report finished, redress needed
The Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State and Faith-Based Care has delivered its final report to Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro.
The report will become public when it’s presented to parliament on July 24.
Tu Chapman from the Royal Commission’s Survivor Advisory Group of Experts says it’s been six long years for survivors to have their experiences acknowledged and validated.
She hopes Māori and Aotearoa in general will read and embrace the report.
“There’s a lot of pages, there’s a few volumes, and the content is jarring, it’s impactful. I hope the report is received well firstly by Government and they acknowledge its contents and engact the recommendations without delay, and then we go out to te iwi Māori, survivors and New Zealand in general,” Tu Chapman says.
Survivors need not just an apology but meaningful redress.
