Tāmaki Makaurau MP Takutai Natasha Kemp is defending the crossed duelling pistols on the poster of Te Pāti Māori-linked protest group Toitū Te Tiriti’s latest activation.
The roopū is organising marches and carkoi in centres around the country tomorrow to protest the Budget and what they say is the Government’s attacks on Māori.
New Zealand First minister Shane Jones says the image normalises guns and is also reflective of outdated and moribund political analysis.
Ms Kemp says the emblem was as a koha from Otaki based artist Hohepa ‘The HORI’ Thomas in support of their kaupapa.
“Now we’re like any, any movement and we’re taking whānau feedback and we look forward to seeing what the next tohu looks like for our next activation. So we’re all about learning and sharing and taking on board the feedback from whānau. But we just acknowledge that tohu who was given as a koha for the movement to be used,” she says.
