Fisheries Minister Shane Jones says a call to give him the finger is part of the theatre that comes with political life.
The World Wildlife Fund for Nature New Zealand has set up a campaign to send pictures of fish fingers to his inbox with the message he should commit to putting 30 percent of New Zealand’s oceans into marine protected areas by 2030.
Mr Jones says the fisheries resource in in rude health, apart from small areas where we can do better, so the World Wildlife Fund should stick to its knitting.
“Look after the fernbirds and leave the serious politics to those of us who have been democratically elected to fulfil our manifestoes and fulfil our coalition agreements which we are doing through shepherding the fast track piece of legislation into the House. I know it’s the subject of a protest coming up in June, but I think people will very quickly learn the majority of Kiwis are concerned about their economic prospects, not being intimidated by green eco-catastrophication,” he says.
