New blood for Te Matatini regionals in Rotorua, Taranaki
Two dozen Te Arawa kapa haka take the stage at the Rotorua Events Centre this weekend for the chance to represent the rohe at Te Matatini 2025 in New Plymouth.
Six new kapa will compete alongside veterans like Tuhourangi, Ngati Wāhiao and two time champions Ngāti Rangiwewehi, .
Te Arawa Matatini delegate Dan Vaka says the new roopu reflect the mahi Te Arawa pakeke have done to pass down their passion for haka.
“I guess over the years, the pride intensifies and the willingness to ensure that legacy continues. That’s the good thing for Te Arawa,” he says.
The Te Arawa regional competition will begin with whakangahau performances today, competitive teams will take the stage from 9am tomorrow.’
Meanwhile Te Matatini host rohe, Te Kāhui Maunga, also holds its regional competition in Te Hāwera tomorrow.
A whakangahau pōwhiri for the 13 kapa will be held today, ahead of tomorrow’s competitive performances held at Te Whare o Ruapūtahanga/TSB Hub in Te Hāwera.
Delegate Rawiri Tinirau says new roopu outnumber past competitors, adding diversity from as more districts enter teams.
“You know, some of these new teams, they are kaupapa focused. We’ve got one team that is representative of their iwi. So yeah, it’s really good to see different and new roopu emerging, and no doubt they will have some experienced performers in their ranks,” he says.
