Fund to help rangatahi with identity documents
Young Maori are to get help securing identity documents and IRD numbers.
The Passport to Life – Taiohi Ararau will assist taiohi aged 15 to 24.
Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell says not having documentation and certification can be a barrier to young people entering the workforce, education or training.
"It’s about giving young people a passport, a photo ID, a driver's licence most importantly, a birth certificate. Those sorts of things a hugely important and set people up for life. It's not just about getting those certificates but also the other things that come with it – turning up for a course, life skills, etc etc," he says.
There was $4 million in the Budget for the pilot, with more to come.
