Ngāti Porou has laid to rest the Venerable Morehu Te Ngaroroa Te Maro, known usually as Papa Boyce and occasionally as the mighty canon.
He was 93.
Ngāti Porou rangatira Tā Herewini Parata says the Anglican minister was a valued contributor to tribal life and to the Ngāti Porou treaty claims, as well as conducting his ministry among whānau, hapū and working with organisations like Police.
He was raised at Tikapa at the mouth of the Waiapu River.
“He was nurtured in the tradition of serving. To be able to serve enables a person to lead. Papa Boyce was both of those. We’re going to miss him immensely. We pay tribute to his family for sharing him with the rest of Ngāti Porou and the rest of Aotearoa actually,” Ta Herewini says.
Papa Boyce has been buried with his ancestors at Pukenamunamu Cemetery.
