Firework sales spark maunga lockdown
There’s lockdown on top of lockdown in Tāmaki Makaurau as the Tūpuna Maunga Authority cuts off access to the city’s volcanic cones until after Guy Fawkes Day.
Chair Paul Majurey says it’s in response to a several years of fires sparked by fireworks.
The restrictions worked last year.
“It’s very much a measure of last resort. We know how important these taonga are to our people as we have seen again during Covid restrictions. These places are very much the source of inspiration and peace for people in these difficult times,” he says.
Mr Majurey praised The Warehouse for its decision to stop selling fireworks.
