Name and shame option for cybersquatters
The Māori Internet Society is on the hunt for anti-Māori websites or people who register Māori or iwi domain names they have no right to.
President Karaitiana Taiuru says the Māori.nz space still has problems with people registering names to make some sort of racist point.
Creating new top level domains including kiwi.nz has also led to an upsurge in cybersquatting, where people register the names of iwi or companies in the hope they can get them to pay a ransom.
“We’re happy to work with anyone who stops these sorts of websites and domain names to help them out. There are alternatives to sorting the issues out, like making formal complaints, using the law of New Zealand as well as using the old fashion name and shame. We’re definitely keen work with anyone who is has those issues,” he says.
Karaitiana Taiuru says cybersquatting is a problem all indigenous groups are battling.
