Waipareira appeals high court decision
Te Whānau ō Waipareira has filed an appeal against a High Court decision striking out its challenge to the axing of its Family Start contact.
The lower court had upheld the right of the Ministry of Social Development to sack contractors, and rejected any suggestion there was a treaty relationship between Waipareira and the Crown.
Mr Tamihere says the battle is being conducted on behalf of all Māori providers who face a different standard of scrutiny than mainstream, providers.
“Ninety percent of the money goes to non-Māori providers. The other nine percent goes to us, but we get ninety percent of the supervision, we get ninety percent of the microscope. I’ve had enough of us all being ground down and ground down all the time, when their own mates within the larger providers get away with murder” says John Tamihere.
