Early childhood education will have children fly
The chair of a South Auckland early childhood education taskforce is welcoming by Manurewa MP Louisa Wall’s call for schools to enrol children from the age of four.
Colleen Brown says it’s one of a suite of ideas coming out of efforts to address the fact that only 27 percent of children in the region with a high Maori and Pasifika population were attending preschools.
She says primary schools throughout New Zealand are a trusted community hub, and involving them could encourage parents to get their children into the system.
Colleen Brown says many Maori and Pasifika people don’t send their children to early childhood education because they didn’t have it themselves and don’t understand its value.
