Auckland Maori plan pushing for fair share
The chair of Auckland’s Independent Maori Statutory Board says the Maori Plan for Tamaki Makaurau aims to stop Maori being invisible when resources are shared out.
The plan released yesterday spells out the aspirations of the super city’s Maori population and asks for $29 million a year for the next ten years to start meeting those aspirations.
David Taipari says the Auckland council can do more to treat Maori citizens fairly, whether it’s in support for cultural facilities, promoting use of Te Reo Maori of helping people take up home insulations subsidies.
“There are a number of opportunities where people across the Auckland region can be provided with that support or those subsidies to energy retrofit their homes that will provider healthier homes, and healthier children. We want to see that happen and we don’t believe it’s quite happening and that’s an aspiration or a goal is that Maori homes are insulated,” he says.
