Last day for land law review submissions
Today is the last day to lodge submissions on the review of Te Ture Whenua Māori Land Act.
Review chair, Matanuku Mahuika, says there was widespread feeling that Māori land was not meeting its potential, so the review aimed to identify any barriers to productivity that could be removed.
He says of the five propositions set out, one of the most controversial have been to tackle fragmentation of ownership by setting a minimum shareholding for voting.
"People have been split between wanting to deal with the issues of fragmentation and talking about whanau trusts and consolidating whanau interests somehow, but there has also been people who said this represents someone's connection to this piece of land, they should be able to inherit, and we really have to find other ways to deal with the consequence of fragmentation," Mr Mahuika says.
People can see the document and make submissions through the Te Puni Kokiri website.
