Māori to lag for 27 more years
Labour’s regional economic development spokesperson Shane Jones has challenged National’s economic supremo for failing to work for Māori.
He says the target set by Steven Joyce’s Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment is for Māori income to reach the median by 2040 is hardly aspirational.
He says as the man in charge of economic development, Mr Joyce should understand the problems Māori face and get to work on them.
Instead his ministry blames high unemployment in parts of the country on the high Māori population in those regions.
Mr Jones says Mr Joyce runs his portfolios for casino owners and merchant bankers, and he hates dealing with Māori issues.
