Use of Māori domains studies
The Māori Internet Society is trying to find out how many people are using Māori domain names.
Chair Karaitiana Taiuru says it is now 17 years since Internet New Zealand created dot iwi dot nz for iwi use, and 12 years since the creation of dot Māori dot nz.
He says there are now 78 dot iwi registrants and more than 1000 dot Māori names allocated, but there has been no research done to find out how effective the names were or whether they’ve helped authors publish Māori content to the web.
Mr Karaitiana says he also wants to hear from Māori content providers who choose not to use indigenous domain names.
He will also look at the growing trend to use social media links as primary web site addresses and free web mail email addresses as the primary email address.
The research could provide a benchmark for other Indigenous Peoples who may be considering adopting an indigenous domain name.
