Tipene handles championship pressure
It was a weekend of upsets at the New Zealand Shearing Championships at Te Kuiti.
Home town idol David Fagan finished sixth behind Golden Shears winner Rowland Smith in the open shearing, and defending champion, John Kirkpatrick failed to make the final.
Commentator, Doug Laing says there was also a shock result in the open woolhandling, where 28-year-old Hanatia Tipene got up to win.
“She hasn’t competed in the show since last year in Te Kuiti, where she now lives. She comes from Porangahau down in the southern Hawkes Bay and she hasn’t worked in the wool shed for 3 years. She still got the touch and beat all the favourites. Three of the world champions got eliminated in the semi-finals,” says Doug Laing from Shearing Sports New Zealand.
