Tap opens for help after storm
Northland’s storm has been declared a medium scale adverse event, allowing farmers and others affected to access some rural assistance and Task Force Green funding.
The government had been criticised by Labour MP Kelvin Davis and Northland Regional Councillor Dover Samuels for its limited response to the crisis.
Many people had homes damaged by flooding, clean water is in short supply in some communities, and some homes are still to get their power back on.
Work is continuing to create a bypass around the section of State Highway one near Kaitaia that washed out, preventing essential supplies of food and fuel reaching the far north.
