Ngati Porou diaspora for oral history

Hamilton woman Kayla Ratima has won an oral history award to interview Ngati Porou whose parents or grandparents who moved away from the hau kainga.
She gets a grant of $2600 towards the project Titiro ke uta ra, ke Hikurangi Maunga / Cast your gaze inward – inland – toward Hikurangi.
The Ministry for Culture and Heritage awarded just over $100,000 to 12 projects in this year’s awards, with the recordings to be placed in the Alexander Turnbull Library.
Other projects include the stories of Pacific people in Christchurch during the rebuild, the history of the Pacifica Mamas and Papas in West Auckland, protest against the Vietnam War, and a study on rugby league and working class culture.
