The father of six from Tuhoe, Ngati Porou, Waikato-Ngati Maniapoto Iwi is chaier of Manurewa Marae.
He has held a number of other elected and appointed positions in the community, as well working for Maori public health provider Hapai Te Hauora Tapui.

Meanwhile, Labour closes its nominations 5pm today.
The selection was held open until TVNZ completed an investigation into the activities of prospective nominee Shane Taurima, the former head of the broadcaster’s Maori and Pacific unit.
Will Flavell, who won a local board seat in last year’s local government election, has now emerged as another potential candidate.
