Flavell slams Christchurch landlords
Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell has asked his ministry to see what help it can give to whanau in Christchurch living in what he calls appalling conditions.
Mr Flavell says he was outraged by what he saw of rental housing on a tour of the city this week.
He says some houses had gaping holes in the floors and walls, no doors to hold the heat in and rats in these houses.
Landlords keep raising rents, often without any improvements.
The Maori Party has called for a warrant of fitness on all State-owned houses, and it wants it extended to all private rentals.
