Aspirations to leadership
The Labour leadership contest is entering its final week, with the four candidates answering a wide range of questions at hustings meetings around the country.
Candidate Nanaia Mahuta says the loyal support for Labour by Maori, Pacific and South Auckland voters is weighing on members as they make their choices.
She says there is a lesson there for the whole party.
"Maori and Pacific people don’t live in a vacuum and don’t live in isolated communities. We are engaged fully. We are aspirational. We’ve got big plans for our families and our communities and we want Labour to be more relevant to those aspirations as we move forward, so people have been pretty positive about that," Ms Mahuta says.
West Auckland Labour Party members can hear the four leadership candidates at Massey High School’s Performing Arts Centre at 7.30 tonight, and tomorrow night they are at Nga Tapuwae Community Centre in Mangere.
