Families homeless while sale plans made
Manurewa MP Louisa Wall is calling for a moratorium on the sale of state houses in her electorate.
The Government has indicated it wants to sell thousands of Housing New Zealand properties to church and community groups and property developers, but it won’t give firm numbers or a timeframe.
Ms Wall says at the same time her office is trying to help families who are living in cars while state houses lie empty.
"Within the context of extreme needs with empty state houses, I think that the government is getting ready to sell those houses and not put families in them, and that is wrong," she says.
Louisa Wall says there are at least 76 empty state houses in Manurewa, and as many as 1000 across Tamaki Makaurau.
