Anger traded for Mana Motuhake
Tuhoe negotiator Tamati Kruger says today’s crown apology will allow the iwi to set aside distrust and anger and create its own future.
Government ministers and police will be at Te Uru Taumatua in Taneatua to acknowledge events stretching back to the 1860s, when colonial troops first made incursions into Te Urewera and took much of Tuhoe’s most productive land.
Mr Kruger says the wrongs of the past can’t continue to rob Tuhoe of its future.
"It is a big huge leap for all of us to let go of anger, it is not an easy thing to do. Sometimes anger becomes not only our preoccupation, it becomes our career, and we become very good at it. But we're trading that in, we want to trade that in for mana motuhake," he says.
