TOKM joins marine mining protest
Maori fisheries settlement trust Te Ohu Kaimoana has joined 11 other parties in opposing Trans Tasman Resources' bid to mine iron sands off the coast of Taranaki.
The Australian-owned company is appealing the Environmental Protection Authority's refusal to grant it a marine consent.
The parties opposing the appeal include Ngati Ruanui and other iwi, fishing industry parties and non-government organisations.
Te Ohu Kaimoana says there is major uncertainty over what effect digging out iron sands from just outside the 12-mile limit will have on fish stocks.
It says that could affect the property rights iwi have gained through the fisheries settlement.
No date has yet been set for the appeal.
