Catholic justice and development organisation Caritas has produced an educational resource aimed at making the Maori version of the Parihaka story more widely known.
Bishop Charles Drennan from the Palmerston North diocese says many people who grew up in Taranaki are reluctant to accept anything but the sanitised settler account of history, leading to unresolved tensions.
He hopes increased knowledge and dialogue will lead to a greater level of understanding and respect.
The resource booklet Parihaka o nehera, o naianei/Parihaka – past and present will be launched tomorrow at the Catholic Education Convention in Wellington.
Parihaka community leader Dr Ruakere Hond will speak to the hui about the community’s 150 year history of resilience and peaceful resistance and what is happening there now.
Meanwhile, the Puanga Kai Rau Festival to celebrate the Maori new year happens again this Friday and Saturday at Parihaka Pa, including a fire-lighting ceremony, a pre-dawn climb to witness the rising of Puanga over Taranaki, and a concert featuring Horomona Horo, Kahutahi, Te Kohikohinga Kohatu, Ire Exit and Shaskeen Reel.
