Bridge budget in credibility hole
Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis isn’t expecting much for the Northland part of his electorate in this week’s budget.
During the Northland by-election, National promised investment in the region including new bridges and broadband, but its candidate was still trounced by New Zealand First’s Winston Peters.
Mr Davis says Northlanders are used to promises.
"When they make these promises they roll them out over three or four years. Anything can happen in that time. They say they will do 10 bridges over four years. Four years later maybe one, maybe two of these bridges will be built, so I don't trust them with whatever they say," he says.
Mr Davis also doesn’t believe Finance Minister Bill English’s promise to get the government’s books back into the black time soon, and the score on delivering a budget surplus is now Labour 9, National zero.
