Drive to learn wins Matawai place
The Taitokerau representative on the new te reo Maori advocacy body says he’s looking forward to the chance to give back some of what the language has given him.
Waihoroi Shortland says he encountered many of his fellow Te Matawai members at the start of their reo journeys.
"And just the sheer drive they've bought to that journey, raised them to a place where they are now major contributors to the revival of the reo. These are people who started at the bottom rung of the reo journey and if people like this can raise themselves to the heights they've managed, it says a lot for what is possible," says Waihoroi Shortland.
There is just the South Island seat and the two ministerial appointments to fill before Te Matawai can start working.
