Murder of indigenous activist environmental wake up call
Green MP Marama Davidson says the murder of an indigenous activist in Honduras brings home the importance of fighting to protect the environment.
Berta Caceres won an international prize last year for her fight against a dam project which would have cut off the supply of water, food and medicine for hundreds of her Lenca people.
The Central American country has been wracked by increasing violence and repression since a United States-backed coup in 2009 consolidated power in the hands of a small number of wealthy families.
Ms Davidson says she was an inspiration for indigenous people everywhere trying to protect their land and water.
"Berta Caceres is really on my mind and understanding that the threat to our environment is a threat to women. Violence to women is violence to the environment. We are linked and it really is timely to really think of her and acknowledge her in all of our fights," says Marama Davidson.
